International Women's Day 2022

Today on International Women’s Day (8th March) we celebrate the work done by village birth attendants in Mali. Birth attendants are highly respected members of the community, who can also play a key role in improving nutrition and women and children’s health. There’s high maternal mortality on the Dogon Plateau, with many women dying from preventable causes, such as anaemia, poor hygiene, birth complications away from health centres or untreated malaria when they give birth. We've provided training to 142 of them, from 41 villages in Wadouba in the Mopti region in 2020-21. Topics include: identification of high-risk pregnancies, risks to younger or older mothers, fast referral to a health centre for complications. We are extremely short of funding for the coming year, with some projects being reduced. Please consider giving to our work via the website donations page. If you cannot give at present, please share our posts widely with your friends and groups on social media or via email, to spread the word about our critical work in Mali. #internationalwomensday #IWD2022 #mali
